Bardia National Park
Nestled in the remote Terai region of western Nepal, Bardia National Park is a Nepal wildlife paradise that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Renowned for its lush jungles, diverse wildlife, and tranquil riverine landscapes, Bardia offers an authentic jungle safari experience that rivals more famous parks in Asia. Whether you are an avid birder, a wildlife photographer, or simply a nature enthusiast, Bardia National Park promises an unforgettable encounter with Nepal’s pristine wilderness.
History of Bardia National Park
Originally established as the Royal Hunting Reserve in 1969, the area was declared a national park in 1988 to protect its growing population of endangered species. Over the years, strong wildlife conservation efforts—ranging from anti-poaching initiatives to habitat restoration—have transformed Bardia into one of Nepal’s premier sanctuaries. Today, it spans over 968 square kilometers, encompassing grasslands, riverine forests, and dense sal forests that harbor a remarkable variety of flora and fauna.
Main Animals and Wildlife
Bardia is famous for its large population of Bengal tigers boasting one of the highest densities in Nepal—and the rare one-horned rhinoceros. Visitors can also spot Asiatic elephants, leopards, wild boars, spotted deer, and more than 400 species of birds. With winding rivers such as the Karnali River and Babai, the park is also home to the elusive Gangetic river dolphin and the critically endangered gharial crocodile. Whether you’re an adventurous safari-goer or a keen naturalist, the rich biodiversity of Bardia is sure to captivate you.
